DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACY PRACTICE

The department has the expertise to conduct the following:
1. Bioequivalence studies of formulations.
2. Phase I studies of new drug entities.
3. Phase IV studies (Post marketing surveillance) for new drugs and formulations.

 

Collaborative Projects conducted by the dept

1. Repeat Insult Patch Test (RIPT) of dermatological preparations.
2. Study of Antiglaucoma properties of some formulations.
Both the above projects were in collaboration with Sami Labs, Bangalore.

Ongoing Collaborative Projects

1. Bioequivalence studies of Ketoprofen formulations with Bharatiya Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Pune.
2. Bioequivalence studies of antihypertensive formulations with Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, Bangalore. (Ph.D project of RGUHS).

Completed Projects

1. Bioavailability and Bioequivalence studies of Felodipine formulations.
2. Pharmacokinetic Evaluation of new NSAIDS.
Both the above were part of M.Pharm dissertation of RGUHS.

The ever increasing patient load on our clinicians and the increasing number of new drug formulations in the market has made it practically impossible for our healthcare professionals to obtain unbiased drug information and/or o find the time for the same. Information on the drugs being prescribed and used is necessary to promote safe, effective and rational use of drugs.

Evaluation of the Utility of Intravenous Nitroglycerin In Hypertensive Emergencies.
Name of the Principal Investigator: Dr. Shobha Rani R. H.

Although intravenous nitroglycerin is approved to control peri-operative hypertension associated with surgical procedures and in patients with ischemic heart disease, the use of this drug in hypertension alone is not investigated. There is also no literature available on the same. It is felt by the cardiologists that the use of nitroglycerine is not fully explored in hypertensive emergencies in Indian population. Thus, the present project was taken up to evaluate the comparative efficacy of IV nitroglycerin against sublingual nifedipine in the managementof hypertensive emergencies/urgencies.

The present project aims to study the usage of oral antibiotics in Acute Supporative Otitis Media at Victoria Hospital. The widespread use of oral antibiotics to treat Acute Supporative Otitis Media has resulted in an alarming increase in antibiotic-resistance of the bacterial strains that cause the same.

Preparation of Guidelines for Management of Alcohol Withdrawal with Chlordiazepoxide at Victoria Hospital, Bangalore.
Name of Principal Investigator: Mr. Venugopal Reddy

Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome and its complications are common in alcohol-dependent patients who reduce or discontinue their alcohol intake. A report from Institute of Medication, Washington (1990) notes the superiority of Benzodiazepines over all other agents used for alcohol withdrawal, Chlordiazepoxide being the commonest Benzodiazepine used.
